Grazing Leases

American Prairie Reserve has tens of thousands of acres of grassland habitat available for summer cattle grazing leases in south Phillips County and Fergus County in eastern Montana. A map of the areas to be leased is below. You may also download the map. Leases will be for one – three years with the potential to renew the lease for additional years, if both parties agree to the renewal terms. We are seeking requests for proposals (RFP).   • Has a high acceptance of and appreciation for native wildlife species on their own ranches.
  • Is willing and able to enter into the Wild Sky Rancher program (for more information see
  • Will publicly support American Prairie Reserve goals and programs.
  • Supports wildlife restoration projects on their own property. 
  • Is willing and able to participate in scientific studies. 
  • Has or is willing and able to help create and support public recreation opportunities. 
  • Currently is or is willing and able to operate with wildlife friendly fences and harvest practices on their own property.
  • Has or is willing and able to test new methods to reduce cattle/wildlife conflicts.
  • Has a history of supporting environmental conservation efforts related to wildlife, grasslands, water, and soil. 
  • Has the experience and knowledge to successfully manage a cattle grazing operation in a manner which ensures rangeland and  riparian health and to satisfy BLM and DNRC requirements, and 
  • Can provide financial information to demonstrate the lessee has the financial capability to meet the terms of the lease.
