A Breath of Fresh Air

When naturalist, photographer and American Prairie staff member Dennis Lingohr headed out to capture winter on the prairie, he had a surprisingly difficult task. Weeks of mild weather (and melting snow) meant that the landscape was more brown than white! Dennis reports that the bison didn’t mind these sunny, blue sky days, and they seemed content to chomp on exposed grasses at a time of year when food is otherwise buried deep below the snow. The Reserve herd, which currently numbers about 270 animals, should be well-fed by the time that snow inevitably returns to the Northern Plains.
