In Larry Saves the Prairie, author Matt Bergles and illustrator Rob Peters share the true and inspiring story of Kansas wildlife champion Larry Haverfield, who went to court to prevent the community-ordered mass poisoning of prairie dogs. Annabelle and Angus, the prairie dogs that Bergles uses to tell the story, serve as adorable and informative guides.
The back of the book contains several pages for coloring and features a prominent blurb about American Prairie Reserve, including the organization’s logo, under a “How You Can Help” section at the end of the story. Though intended as a children’s book, my family and I have found that the message of the importance of speaking up for the wrongly persecuted and protecting a keystone species resonates across generations. I’m planning to give copies as gifts as well as donate one to our local library.
