TEAM: Weed Control Technician
REPORTS TO: Reserve Project Manager
LOCATION: American Prairie Reserve
GROUP: Flex/Non-Exempt
HOURS PER WEEK: Full time at 40 hours per week with overtime paid at time and a half for hours worked over 40 in a workweek; overtime must be pre-approved by a supervisor.
TEMPORARY JOB: Minimum 1 month, up to and ideally 4-month position
JOB ROLE PROVISIONS: Shared staff housing and work vehicle.

Job Purpose: The primary purpose of this highly laborious position is to control and document weeds and provide support for additional restoration activities. Actual job duties may include parts or all of the duties listed below dependent on the needs of the business and the qualifications of the Weed Control Technician.


  • Identify weeds on APR’s deeded and leased lands.
  • Document and maintain detailed electronic data using GPS based software applications.
  • Apply herbicides to undesirable weeds.
  • Mechanically remove undesirable plants with chainsaw, brush mower, and other tools.
  • Operate skid steer, tractor, ATV and/or UTV in remote locations to access and remove weeds.
  • Assist with maintenance and construction of bison facilities.
  • Assist with additional wildlife restoration activities.
  • Perform tasks such as painting, staining and refinishing, mowing, watering, and digging.
  • Assist with basic mechanical repair on vehicles, UTVs, ATVs and other pieces of heavy equipment.
  • Assist with evaluating needed repairs and provide timely report of breakage, damage, or safety concerns.
  • Complete job duties to the specification set forth by employer and in a manner that meets health, sanitation and safety standards and policies including appropriate use of safety and protective equipment.

Specific Skills, Educational Requirements, Credentials, Experience, Knowledge and Attributes that are needed for high performance:

  • 1+ years of related labor experience in weed control including spraying, general farm and ranch or facilities maintenance.
  • Ability and willingness to positively represent APR’s mission, goals, values, and culture.
  • Experience and ability to drive pickups, tractors, ATV and off highway vehicles.
  • Experience and ability to use maintenance tools and equipment such as hand tools and power tools.
  • Ability to safely work and operate off road vehicles in uneven terrain and adverse weather conditions.
  • Valid driver’s license, acceptable driving record, and ability to drive regularly including long distances and on poorly maintained roads in various weather conditions to get to work areas.
  • Reliable transportation for personal travel to and from the Reserve.
  • Basic knowledge of and ability to accurately identify plants.
  • Proficient in using computer software and portable electronic devices.
  • Dependable follow through of work assigned and agreed upon.
  • Ability to adhere to instructions and ask necessary questions to ensure tasks and responsibilities are completed accurately.
  • Demonstrate a proactive and motivated work ethic with ability to work quickly and efficiently to complete tasks and responsibilities.
  • Work independently as well as collaboratively with others.
  • Use chemicals such as herbicides, disinfectants, degreasers, solvents, broom, vacuum, etc.
  • Ability to physically exert self, including lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds or more with assistance.

EXTENUATING WORKING CONDITIONS: This is a highly laborious position that requires physical exertion. Work areas are remote and in some instances rustic and/or uninhabited for periods of time. Duties will be completed both indoors and outdoors under adverse weather conditions. Requires exposure to herbicides, cleaning chemicals, and contaminants. Requires exposure to and use of hazardous equipment and tools.
